Saturday Afternoon with a Prince

Can't believe it's taken me this long to do this but it's one more thing I can tick off the Tallahassee things to do list. I finally went to see the final resting place of Prince Achille Murat (nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte) and his wife Catherine (great-grandniece to George Washington) at the St. John's Episcopal Cemetery at Call Street and Martin Luther King Avenue.

That's right. Tallahassee's Prince Murat Motel is named after true royalty.

Before heading out for my little adventure, I put on the kitsch and groovy new jewelry I received this week from Sunshine City Lassie (See! I'm wearing it off to the left). You can read the full description about the goodies on my primary blog and if you love it as much as I do, buy something from her!

OK, back to my Saturday afternoon jaunt to the cemetery.

I headed downtown and drove down Call Street. I admit to being navigationally challenged and found my self at the Old City Cemetery, established in 1829 and is the city's oldest public cemetery.

Even better, there was a big map with walking guides available, compliments of the Historic Tallahassee Preservation Board and the City of Tallahassee. I grabbed one and wandered through half the cemetery, walking through years of Tallahassee history.

There are even sections where Confederate and Union soldiers are buried. The Union soldiers are believed to be killed at the Battle of Natural Bridge. The Confederate soldiers were killed at the Battle of Natural Bridge and the Battle of Olustee. Some died at nearby hospitals and camps. Interestingly, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans hold services here on Confederate Memorial Day, which is April 26. I may have to check that out. I had no idea there was a Confederate Memorial Day. They just don't teach that up North.

Next stop was the St. John's Episcopal Cemetery, which is basically right across the street, still on MLK.

This cemetery is much smaller and it was fairly easy to find the Murat headstones (pictured on the right). But, I was taken in by the blooming flowers and all the photo opportunities. It was also very peaceful and not creepy at all.

The Murat headstones are worn from the weather and they seem like simple markers for royalty. Maybe that's why there's a motel named after the prince.

Teas Around the World and Travel Show Coming Up at Relaxations Health and Wellness Spa

I'm marking March 20 down in my calendar to head over to Relaxations Health & Wellness at 2790 West Tennessee, Tallahassee. Why? They have an event called Teas from Around the World & Travel Show beginning at 6 p.m. that day. The evening will include samplings of tea, chair massage demos, Relaxation class demos and a speaker from the YTB Travel Network to talk about summer travel options. It's never to early to plan for a vacation!

And what else is happening at Relaxations?

Are Tallahassee Panhandlers Becoming More Aggressive?

Are Tallahassee panhandlers becoming more aggressive? Are there more of them around town?

I went to WalMart today and was asked for a donation for a softball team. At first I was really excited when the little girl approached me. I thought she was a Girl Scout and I wanted to stock up on more Thin Mints but it's probably best she was a softball player. I dropped a buck in her pink helmet.

Heading to the car, two young kids, probably 12 or 13 approached me saying they were collecting money for their church. Granted it was light out but I felt a little threatened and cornered but gave them a dollar. I'd like to think they were really collecting for their church but who knows. It was almost like the kids in Afghanistan begging for money. Not only were the kids begging but they were aggressive about it.

Anyway... I saw someone else come my way, not sure if they were heading to their car or to panhandle me but I quickly got in and left. Pulling out, I passed another panhandler at the usual stop sign. It was a different beggar from what I've seen before but I've noticed beggars tend to change locations.

Heading back home, I noticed a what appeared to be a homeless man tidying up his camp by Mission San Luis and the closer I drove to Monroe from Tennessee, the more homeless people I noticed. I was even panhandled when I went to FedEx-Kinkos on Tennessee earlier this month.

Is this a reflection of the times or have I just not noticed as many people begging in Tallahassee?

So, It Was a Little Windy Friday

My work day begins at 7:45 a.m. so when driving into the office on Friday morning, things seemed a little strange. The sky had a hint of green and there wasn't much traffic. As I turned down Apalachee Parkway, things seemed a bit more odd.


As I got closer to the office, the more tree debris littered the road. Business signs were ripped off and the traffic light at Apalachee and Paul Russel Road was out (BTW - people, when a traffic light is out, treat it as a four-way stop). A palm tree by Staples had the top snapped off, piece of the Village Inn's front awning was on the ground and tree in the office parking lot was down.

If I didn't know any better, I would have thought a tropical storm ripped through the area.

Once in the office, it was as if I missed the memo about the office being closed. Slowly, my co-workers trickled in and at about 8:30 a.m., the power on our floor went out for two hours. Generators kept the bottom floor business going and we had electricity in our multi-purpose room.

What's Shaking in Tallahassee this Weekend? March 7 - 9, 2008

I just have to say I'm truly enjoying these cooler Tallahassee temps. The mornings have been a bit chilly but evenings are crisp and light, perfect walking weather.

Pop some popcorn! Here's a follow up to the Tallahassee visit from the FreshBooks folks, complete with video.

And what cool stuff is on tap for the weekend? As usual, lots of things happening in and around Tallahassee. These events piqued my curiosity:

For a low-key dinner, head north to Havana for Candlelight Dining at the Mockingbird Cafe on Friday & Saturday, March 7 & 8, 6 - 9 p.m. (hope the weather holds!). Dine by twinkling candlelight while enjoying acoustic folk music. Sounds peaceful.

Military buffs will want to head over to Carrabelle for Camp Gordon Johnston Days, March 7 - 9. This is an opportunity to learn about Franklin County during WWII and meet veterans from past wars and modern-day heroes. The weekend includes swing dancing, a parade and lots of eating. Over at Word Traffic Books Saturday is the High School Writers' Guild 2 - 4 p.m. This is an opportunity for high schoolers to share their work. At 4 p.m. it's a launch PARTY for the book of poetry called The Moving Waters by author Mary Jane Ryals. The local award-winning author will read her poetry and sign copies of the book.

FreshBooks RoadBurn 2008 Stops in Tallahassee

The guys from FreshBooks stopped in Tallahassee today on their way from Miami to Austin for SXSW. The Toronto-based company is an online invoicing and time tracking service. Basically, they can handle the back end of your business so you can be more involved in the front end.

Anyway, this post isn't about what they do, you can find that on the FreshBooks site to learn more. This is about RoadBurn 2008, their wondrous road trip (follow the blog) and their stop to see ME!

Their office had contacted me about two weeks ago asking if I'd be available to spend 20 minutes with the crew. Timing was right, I needed a distraction with everything else going on and with limited time, decided on a bit of geocaching at Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park.

Long story short, they arrived, I showed and explained a bit about geocaching, had some fun and went on our way. I'm thankful it was a gorgeous day. The guys are heading to New Orleans tonight.

I gotta thrill seeing Saul and Sunir opening the cache. There was a really creepy (and dirty) baby in there. No, not a real baby, a little plastic one. I really think the baby should be sitting on the crew's RV dashboard making the rest of the road trip, but someone who shall remain nameless was not comfortable with the baby. The FreshBooks crew left some groovy swag in the box and if you're a lucky geocacher, maybe you'll find it.

Road Trip: Travel to Stephen King's Sarasota

Stephen King has a new book out, it's called Duma Key: A Novel. While Duma Key is a fictional island, the plot takes place in and around Sarasota, Fla. This is King's first Florida-based novel and reading Duma Key, one has to wonder, are all the Sarasota-based businesses King mentions some of his favorite hang outs? Maybe.

I really enjoyed writing this article, "Travel to Stephen King's Sarasota" and hope you enjoy exploring Sarasota through the eyes of the book's protagonist, Edgar Freemantle.

Something's Cooking in Havana: Canopy Rose Culinary Arts Studio

When I took my parents to Havana last weekend, I noticed a storefront promoting cooking classes, food writing, food styling, catering, corporate team building cooking and all sorts of other good things. Turns out it's Canopy Rose Culinary Arts Studio and Catering Company and last weekend was its grand opening. The studio, founded by Kathi Dameron, plans on opening its doors to the public during the weekends so they can taste the delicious creations. Yum!

I'm excited because Canopy Rose plans to lead culinary tours. During a conference I attended earlier this month, I learned Florida ranks #2 in the nation as a culinary destination and culinary travel is fastest and largest growing niche in the tourism industry. And, I fit the demographics of the typical foodie to a tee.

Showing My Parents Tallahassee

As I try to get my life back to normal, my parents are in town and I spent the weekend showing them some of the Tallahassee I know. They visited last year and I wanted to show them something different.

Friday night was Salman Rushdie. They dropped me off and picked me up at Ruby Diamond Auditorium. (I know, sounds as though I'm 12-years-old but there's a logical explanation - the office handed over budgets at 4:15 Friday afternoon, meaning I worked past 5, pushing back dinner, oh, never mind. I'm a geek!)

Saturday was a full day of sightseeing with a visit to the Knott House, the Tallahassee Visitors Center, lunch in Havana, shopping in Havana followed by a visit to Bradley's Country Store.

Lunch at Havana's Mockingbird Cafe (211 NW 1st Street, tel: 850.539.2212) was fabulous! I was hungry and opted for the Cuban-style black beans and rice. It was served in a rustic looking clay pot topped with fresh green scallions. The main course was even better, the house salad topped with tender lamb. The salad was yummy and pretty at the same time, hence the photo on the left. To the right is a photo of the back entrance to the cafe.

Ordering was a bit different, you order at the counter and the staff brings out the food. Don't forget to pick up your silverware, etc. Being a perfect chamber-of-commerce-day, we sat outside. Inside is an eclectic mix of local artwork like pottery, paintings and hand-knit purses and scarves.

We browsed the Havana shops like The Planter's Exchange, The Wanderings and Cindy's Chapeaux.

It was fun browsing the costume jewelry, antique trinkets and kitsch buttons and petting the little stuffed seal made from seal fur. I love the shop's presentation and snapped this photo of tiny ribbon flowers.

Bradley's Country Store (10655 Centerville Road, tel: 850.893.4742) is a nice slice of old Tallahassee. A wood-deck patio with wooden rocking chairs welcome visitors. In the back of the store is what we came for, the sausage. After browsing the collection of the store's essentials, we left with a pound of small sausage links, devoured this morning for breakfast.

Dinner at San Miguel (200 West Tharpe Street, tel: 850.385.3346) rounded out the day. I just love their $2 margaritas!

Sunday was a little mellow with running errands and showing them a bit of local color at the Tallahassee Flea Market on Capital Circle. I'm happy to say the American dream is alive and well, guys wearing mullets, plaid shirts and cut-off jeans while drinking Budweiser at 11 a.m. are still a plenty.

Do I Dare? America's Next Top Model Auditions in Tallahassee (2008)

Hey ladies! Do you have what it takes to be America's Next Top Model? Since auditions are being held at a place called, "Chubbys," does this mean I have a shot at becoming America's Next Top Model?

I mean, I have the sass, attitude and drama like all those skinny girls on previous cycles. Plus, I got curves to blow them outta the water, too. So, do I dare audition? Oh, the disappointment. I can't. I'm too old and too short to apply. And I thought I had a future in the modeling world.

St. Patrick's in Tallahassee

Was going through a box of photos tonight and realized all the groovy places I've traveled to over the past decade. One of the coolest experiences I had was spending St. Patrick's Day in Dublin.

With St. Patrick's Day a month away, it's only appropriate I tell ya about the Tallahassee Irish Society's 9th Annual St. Patrick's Parade on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Lake Ella, 2 - 3 p.m. Interested in marching? Contact the society for more info.

While I'm speakin' Irish, I'm going to encourage you to head to the Tallahassee Comedy Zone either March 11 or 12 to laugh along with (or laugh at) the Irish Comedy Tour. My buddy Stu is the MC at Dr. Grins Comedy Club in Grand Rapids, MI where the Irish Comedy Tour performed earlier this month. He told me to check them out and I just may have to do that. Getting Caught Up with Life

My ex-husband died last week. I'm trying to get over the shock of a 43-year-old man not waking up. While I try to deal with my feelings about the whole relationship, I know I need to move forward with my life. I still have loose ends to tie and don't have the energy to do so right now. But here I am...

Following the plane crash in Tallahassee on Friday, Feb. 8, I headed to the scene the next day to get some snapshots.

What else is happening in my life?

I'm going back to Green Guide Class in Wakulla next week. I had to miss this week's field trip.

This Friday is Salman Rushdie as part of Seven Days of Opening Nights then my parents arrive for a weekend visit. Think we'll be visiting the Knott House on Saturday. After that, not sure what we'll be doing.

One thing's for sure, I need to get going on cleaning up my apartment.

This Is What I'm Going Through Today

I had planned on posting something witty today, but the mood changed early on. This is what's happening with me right now. As a lesson, live life without regrets and guilt.

How do You Show Your Friends Tallahassee in Four Hours?

I had visitors on Friday. I love having visitors and wish more people would visit me. It gives me a chance to do things I normally wouldn't do by myself.

So on Friday afternoon my college pal Val (who lives in Buffalo, NY) and her new boyfriend, Rob (who lives in Seminole, FL), stopped in Tallahassee on their way from Panama City to Gainesville. (I'd tell you more but I don't want to complicate things.) Their pit stop was four hours and I had to figure out the best way to maximize our time.

We met at Lake Ella and it was a fabulous day (sorry to those of you who had to work Friday). We grabbed a quick beverage at the Black Dog Cafe. It's been a long time since I've visited the Black Dog and realized how much I love that place. Then it was off for lunch. I originally wanted to have lunch at the train caboose restaurant at Railroad Square but it was about 3 p.m. now and figured it'd be closed. So, parked downtown in an hour parking spot and headed into Jasmine.

"We don't like sushi."

*GASP!* I actually have friends who don't like sushi. OK, change in the spontaneous plans. We walked up to Monroe and I'd hoped something would slap me in the face and say, "eat here."

I spotted the Po' Boys sign and figured that'd be a safe bet. Turned out to be a good call and we were outta there just barely under an hour. It's just after 4 p.m. and headed to the Old Capitol. I missed the turn for the easy parking area (I'm not an aggressive driver) so by the time we go into the Old Capitol, it was 4:20 and we had 10 minutes to see it all. We ran from one end to the other, upstairs, then down and out. (BTW - the American flag was at half staff, anyone know why?)

Drove through some of the FSU campus, Railroad Square and back to Lake Ella along Meridian so they could see some of Tallahassee's famous canopy roads. Arrived at Lake Ella at 5:30, in time for ice cream from Barb's Brittles. I love her brittle and purchased a couple of bags for Val and Rob (original and chocolate pecan - can't get anymore southern than that!). It was the first time I had her homemade ice cream - a scoop of "Whatever" and another of "Sunflower" something. I loved the Sunflower.

We sat at Lake Ella enjoying the beautiful day and watching the ducks begging for a taste of our creamy treat. And then, it was time for them to hit the road for Gainesville. I think I did pretty good in giving them a taste of Tally. My parents are visiting at the end of this month, hope I get to do at least twice as much!

VOTE?

Looks like McCain will take the Republican vote and Hillary's taking the Democratic one here in Florida. Interesting. Here in Tally, don't think I saw a single Clinton sign. Have seen loads of Ron Paul, handful of Huckabee and sprinkling of Giuliani signs. But then again, maybe Tallahassee isn't representative of the entire state.

Anyway, I cast my vote during the early voting period and suppose my choice ranked third, I haven't heard.

And what's new with me? Just got back from a business trip to the Dallas-Fort Worth area and head out again on Saturday for another biz trip. TCC's Green Guide program started last night and I'll be taking a few classes this semester. I heard it's the largest group yet. Which is very cool.

I'll be able to catch up on things going on in and around Tallahassee soon (I hope).

The Snakes are Coming! The Snakes are Coming!

Alright, the snakes necessarily coming to Tallahassee, they're heading out to Whigham, Ga. for the Rattlesnake Roundup. The event is this Saturday and is bound to be a biting good time.

I won't be able to make it but my visit last January has me set for at least another year or so. If you do go, be sure to taste the snake, heard it tastes more like fish than chicken. Better yet is bringing home a lovely rattlesnake memento, such as a key chain (as pictured).

John McCain's Coming to Tally!

And I won't get to see him! I've mentioned before I'm feeling left out of the whole political scene here in Tallahassee regarding the Presidential race. The Democratic candidates aren't coming here (for fear of wrath of the National Democratic Committee) so my only hope was catching a glimpse of the Republican candidates. I mean, this could potentially could be the next President of the United States.

I had checked Rudy Giuliani's Web site and there was NO mention he'd stop in Tallahassee but low and behold, he made a stop on Friday. (He's not going to win anyway, his name's too hard to spell). I checked out Mitt Romney's site and he seems to be doing all his campaigning in South Florida (makes sense, there's more money down there and more of his "people" and by "people" I mean Northerners, people from New York, New England and the Midwest).

I was TICKLED to see John McCain is making a stop tomorrow at the Flightline Tallahassee Hangar at 10 a.m.

YES! I thought. I was about to hit the RSVP button but remembered I have a meeting at work. This just sucks. I won't be able to see ANY of the candidates.

Guess I just have to hope when the Presidential candidates are picked they'll be running through Tallahassee to shake hands and kiss babies.

Yup, you read the headline correctly, Jan. 24 is Belly Laugh Day. I don't think Hallmark makes a card for this one (yet) but it's all in good cheer and spirit.

I interviewed Belly Laugh Day founder Elaine Helle last year who gave me the scoop on why she started the holiday, its purpose and how it should be celebrated. Wanna know more? Read about Belly Laugh Day here.

The interesting thing she said are the magic numbers of "1" and "24" and how these have been associated with happy things. My youngest sister was born on Jan. 24 and she is one of the most positive, happiest people I know. Maybe there really is a connection between "1," "24" and a good ole' belly laugh.

National African American Read-In: Feb. 3, 2008

Saturday, February 3, 2008 is the Nineteenth National African American Read-In, sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the NCTE. The event is to celebrate African American literacy and make it an important part of Black History Month.

Locally, you can participate at the Wakulla County Library on Feb. 3 between 3 and 5 p.m. Local African American authors, including Barbara Joe-Williams, will read from their written works.

Participate and be part of something big!

My Three Dollar Vote

Despite the Florida Democrats having had our delegates stripped for the Democratic Presidential convention, I voted in the primary.

I can't think in advance to request an absentee ballot (when I lived in the national parks, I never needed to request an absentee ballot, it was automatically sent due to the remote location) so thank goodness for early voting! I cast my vote last week because I'll be traveling on Jan. 29.

Any registered voter can vote early, visit the Leon County Supervisor of Elections for early voting polling places and hours.

Here's a word of caution. As I'm STILL figuring out the community, don't park in a private parking lot to vote at the Leon County Courthouse - use the public one. It cost me $3 to vote! If I had parked in a public lot, I would have received $1.50 off my parking. *sigh* Suppose it was worth it.

Just wondering, am I the only one feeling left out of the political campaigning? I missed Rudy Giuliani's visit to town last week. I know the Democrats have been threatened with fines if they choose to campaign in Florida (due to someone's brilliant idea of pushing up the primary) but I at least want to see the Republican candidates. I hate to admit this, but I think Mitt Romney would make a decent president. (After all, Democrat Richardson has dropped out.) McCain's not too bad but maybe he's a little old school.

One thing's for sure, we need a change.

Walk and Talk with an FSU Prof this Thursday at the Brogan

Got plans Thursday night? Head over to the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and join FSU Professor John Mann as he discusses the exhibit, "The Architect's Brother" by Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison.

I haven't seen the exhibit but found some of the photos online. It's a collection of photographs by Robert ParkeHarrison depicting man's overuse of the land then making amends. Images are translated through dark, humorous whimsy.

The walk and talk is 5 - 8 p.m. on Thurs., Jan. 17, 2008. Fee is $10 for Museum members and $15 for non-members. Fee includes admission and refreshments.

The Brogan holds evening events the third Thursday of each month. And who said there isn't anything to do in Tallahassee?

Travel to Sarasota: Have Ya Made the Trip Yet?

I spent the weekend in Sarasota to help my grandma celebrate her 85th birthday. Although I didn't grow up there, I spent four years living in Sarasota prior to coming to Tallahassee. It always feels like going home when I make the 5 hour drive down I-75. And I feel like such a college student when I bring my dirty laundry with me and return with goodies from my pal Zelda May.

The 10-hour round trip journey is worth it when I get to walk the beach (Siesta Key, to be exact), spend time with family and friends and just hang out and enjoy the city.

The Sarasota bay front currently has the Season of Sculpture exhibit with dozens of intriguing (and controversial) pieces of art. I didn't get to see much of the art, was on a tight schedule, but had time to play under the giant tooth. There was a sculpture paying tribute to Andy Wharhol but didn't get to see that one up close. Will make note to see it during my March visit.

Saturday night was an evening family and friends. Good times, good times. I started at Yume Sushi for, well, sushi, sake and good conversation. I was able to get caught up with my team members from the Rotary GSE program.

I ended at Ophelia's on Siesta Key for grandma's birthday dinner. She was so cute. I had to point out to her on her driver's license that yes indeed, she was turning 85 and not 84 as she'd been telling everyone.

It was a fab evening outside on the water. I blew my entire dining budget on that one dinner but it was well worth it. It's probably the area's most romantic restaurant.

Sunday was Sarasota Art's Day, one of my most favorite events in Sarasota. It's a day to celebrate all arts. All the cultural and arts organizations have booths set up to educate visitors about their services. Stages are set up throughout downtown and everything from folk trios to ballet dancers perform throughout the day. Best of all are all the artists who display their artwork. I was tempted to purchase a painting which was well under priced but opted to put those funds towards last year's trip to Italy.

Pink Shoes! And Other Cool Things at the Tallahassee Mall

When I left the apartment early this afternoon to run errands, I was anticipating to be gone a couple of hours. I spent the entire afternoon at the Tallahassee Mall doing what I loathe doing - shopping.

Yes, it's true. I'm not a shopper but am one out to find the deals. I heard this week's Sunday paper would be full of super coupons so I began at the Dollar Tree on N. Monroe (the Sunday paper's only a $1 plus tax, I save a whole 25 cents).

Next it was the Hallmark where Valentine's Day exploded all over the store. I needed a birthday card and know I can rely on Hallmark's "Fresh Ink" collection. You know, those square cards sometimes with whimsical or quirky or modern phrases. [Pictured is one a friend sent last year.]

To my dismay, the "Fresh Ink" line wasn't there! In order to make room for Valentine's Day (there must be a lotta love in Tallahassee because that's largest display of Valentine's Day cards I've ever seen) and the musical cards. *sigh* Ended up finding an okay card in large print, which I'm sure Grandma will appreciate.

I noticed the "Store Closing" sign at Dillard's so wandered in. Basically things are marked down anywhere from 40% to 75% and even more if you can figure out what 75% of 50% of 40% is. Anyway, good deals. Slacks and skirts for $9.95 and dresses for $14.95. The downside was the lack of available dressing rooms. I waited about 30 minutes to try on a dozen garments only to return them to the rack.

I lucked out in the shoe department, scoring three pairs of fab shoes with the biggest find being a shiny pink pair for under five bucks (note, that's less than $5 for the pair, not per shoe). Not sure where I'm going to wear them but I love them!

Next was Bath and Body Works. Had a coupon for a free product with purchase of anything. Since they were having a major sale, I picked up a few goodies for less than five bucks. (Can use them for the secret pal thing we have going on at work.)

Heading back to the car, the survey people asked if I wanted to take a survey. YES! Now, if you see these clipboard-toting people in the Tallahassee Mall, don't be afraid of them. If you get taken into the research office, you're going to be financially compensated. Being 4 p.m., I was the last classification type they were looking for: 35+ woman with no kids. Made $2 and returned to the Dollar Tree for a treat, Luigi's Italian Ice (only a buck!).

Had planned on venturing out to the rest of Tallahassee but just didn't make it. Maybe next weekend.

Should I Bother Voting in the Florida Democratic Primary?

As a Floridian, can't we once have an election year when we can show the rest of the world that yes, we DO know how to vote?

I'm disappointed my vote in the Florida Democratic primary won't count. The Democratic National Committee sees the way to punish the Florida Democratic Party for pushing up the primary date from Feb. 5 to Jan. 29 is to strip us of our caucus delegates in selecting the Democratic candidate for the 2008 Presidential Campaign. (While the Florida Republicans are being punished, too, their party is only stripping them of half their caucus delegates.)

There is still hope our votes will count, I think it's caught in some legal limbo but it doesn't look good.

Oh, sure, the Florida Dems are saying it's still important to vote in the primary because the rest of the country (excluding Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and other states who vote prior to Jan. 29) will be looking to Florida to see who we choose and help them make a decision when they vote.

Well, I partly agree with this.

The rest of the country will be looking at Florida and how we vote but won't be looking at who we vote for. The rest of the country, and the world, will be looking to see if we can vote CORRECTLY. In 2000 we had hanging chads and elections onward, we've had issues with touch screens.

When we go and vote this year, let's see if we can do it right. But this being the great State of Florida, I don't think that's going to happen.

This year's program is called "Our Children Speak" and will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at Amen-Ra's Bookshop, 812 S. Macomb Street. Hope everyone had a pleasant holiday. I enjoyed time with my family up in Western New York. There was snow and all! One of the favorite things I like to do up there is visit the local flea market. It's a bit different than flea markets down South, they're more like antique sales and garage sales.

I love looking for old postcards and was really excited when I found this Tallahassee one. But wait, it's not just a postcard, it folds out with wonderful images of the Capital City. It's written out from Private Alfred J. Held, Jr. to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Held. It's postmarked October 25, 1943 from the Amphibious Training Center. Hmm, will have to see what that is.

Am looking forward to 2008 and new adventures and journeys.

How Will Cheryl Dunlap's Murder Change Our Community?

According to area news outlets (including the "Tallahassee Democrat"), the Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed yesterday the body found in Apalachicola National Forest by hunters on Saturday is indeed that of Cheryl Dunlap, the Wakulla woman missing since Dec. 1.

When I first heard Ms. Dunlap went missing the first week of December, I didn't think much about it until I received a call while from a law enforcement official last week questioning me about what I saw and observed on Saturday, Dec. 1.

My class had a field trip in the area where Ms. Dunlap's car was found and I was the first one to the site. I told the official everything I remembered, which wasn't much and I don't think I was much help. Ever since, I've been racking my brain trying to remember something but have been unsuccessful.

I began following the case this week and reading the discussions posted by "Tallahassee Democrat" readers. I lurked the forums daily, getting myself easily sucked into the rumors and basically creeped out by the facts and the fiction.

There seem to be many unknowns about the case. For instance, Ms. Dunlap was last seen at home, is that where she was victimized? Or did she have a flat tire and stop on the roadside? How did the perp get her ATM pin number? Why do the police think her killer is still in our community? Is her murder related to two Georgia murders? (I don't know the details of those deaths other than dismemberment was involved, but were the victims' ATM cards used, too?)

I assume local law enforcement officials are wondering these questions, too and hopefully, they have the answers and haven't released those answers because it's vital information to solving the case.

One sad thing is for certain, Ms. Dunlap was murdered and her killer is out there. My prayers and condolences are with her family.

So what does this mean for us and our community?

I find it strange I'm referring to this area as "our community." Ever since moving here two-and-a-half-years ago, I've felt like an outsider, like a transient gypsy making a pit stop along a journey to something better. Oddly, somewhere along the way I've developed a sense of community to this place, especially to Wakulla. Maybe I've found the same attractive vortex which kept drawing Ms. Dunlap back to the area (from what I've read, she used to live here, moved away then returned).

I'm a bit of a free-spirit, I enjoy solo adventures but now I think I'll be clipping my wings slightly until the case is solved. I'm not planning on being a shut-in but will be more cautious on the adventures and trips I take. I had thought about biking Wakulla State Park and Apalachicola National Forest by myself but think I'll nix that idea for a while.

I think about the potentially dangerous situations I've been in, but thankfully, someone's been looking out for me and it's time for me to lookout for me, too.

Ms. Dunlap's murder has shaken our open-door community and many people are frightened by what they don't know, I'm included. But let's look at the big picture.

We can't let the murderer alter our lives. Heck, that's what the terrorists try to do.

While I find them goofy, we need to do what the bumper stickers on the law enforcement vehicles say, "Don't be afraid, be alert." I'm not going to let someone take away my liberties, will you? Are you going to be afraid or alert?

The Leon County Sheriff's Office is looking for the truck pictured. Have you seen it? It's sure hard to miss.

Tallahassee Holiday Gift Guide

Give the gift of laughter with a gift certificate to the Tallahassee Comedy Zone. Laugh often and much in 2008.

My favorite Tallahassee gift to give family and friends who live out of the area is a little piece of Tallahassee sweetness from Barb's Brittles. The cute little shop is at Lake Ella and samples, for brittle and yummy ice cream, are happily given. You'll most likely see Barb herself there and if you're overwhelmed with the all the sweet treats, she'll help you. I took some with me to Italy last month for my friend Saverio who gave me an insider's guide to Rome. (By the way, it's okay to get a bag of Barb's Brittles for yourself.)

Bookworms will love a good read. There's Historic Photos of Tallahassee for the history buff, a must-have in the library of anyone who loves North Florida history (read my review about Historic Photos of Tallahassee here). Or, are you looking for books by Tallahassee and local authors? Tallahassee's Anne Holt will be signing books this weekend at the Book Shelf in Thomasville, Ga. on Friday, Dec. 14, 6:30 - 10 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 15, Holt will be at Word Traffic Books, 1 - 3 p.m. She'll be telling stories for children and signing her books at Word Traffic. Holt writes Western novels, you can check out her titles on her Web site.

Word Traffic is also a great resource for books by other Tallahassee and local authors along with gently used books and other goodies. They also have gift cards available, too. (Read my article about the grand opening of Word Traffic Books).

Can't forget the tree huggers on your Christmas list. Give 'em a good paddle with a kayaking trip with the Wilderness Way. They offer kayaking trips for beginners and experienced paddlers. I took a trip with them earlier this fall and had a fabulous time.

Or, give a gift that gives all year round, an Annual Pass for the Florida State Parks. There are many state parks in the Tallahassee area to make this pass worthwhile. Or, it may encourage the receiver to get out and explore other areas of the state. I already have mine for 2008!

Don't forget the Seven Days of Opening Nights in February. Tickets are still available for some events. I requested a ticket to Salman Rushdie's talk on Friday, February 22, 2008. Suppose I need to go read a book of his!

Finally, can't forget Tallahassee's Native Big Brother 8 Houseguest Zach. If you missed my interview with Zach about his new edgy surfwear line called Dolphin Crash, read the article called, "Big Brother 8's Zach Talks About Dolphin Crash" here. (Part 1 of the interview called, "Interview with Tallahassee's Big Brother 8 Houseguest Zach: Part 1.")

The guy's put his heart, soul, livelihood and all his money into making Dolphin Crash successful. The guy has determination and I really hope his venture succeeds. Grab a tank top, pair of shorts or some swim wear for your favorite water bunny. With global warming, everyone will need more of this type of clothing! :)

Suppose I could go on and on with the list of Christmas gift ideas here in Tallahassee, but I won't. I do want to remind you about December 15 being Buy Local Day. Head over to the Locally Owned Tallahassee site for a list of locally-owned businesses and do a bit of shopping with them on Saturday.

Cast Your Vote for Florida's New State Song

Yup, that's right. Floridians can say buh-bye to the current state song, “The Swanee River (Old Folks at Home)” by Stephen C. Foster because it's not politically correct, and cast their vote for their favorite Florida song to replace it.

Little bit of trivia I learned last year when visiting Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park, the only reason the composer wrote a song about the Swanee River is because it rhymed with the rest of the lyrics, not because he'd visited it before. In fact, he never visited Florida. I digress...

Hold your horses Florida voters. We're not able to randomly pick our favorite song about Florida or by a Florida artist. I'm actually disappointed not seeing tunes by Tom Petty or Jimmy Buffett in the line up, but so be it.

Over on Just Sing, Florida!, site visitors can listen to the three finalist songs and vote for their favorite. I don't mean to be harsh (but I'll write it anyway), but can't I write in my choice? Isn't this a democracy?

While I appreciate the efforts these songwriters have put into their songs, I'm just not feeling any of them. In fact, I had to close the computer window because I just couldn't take the off-key singing of one of the songs any longer. It's almost as if I'M THE ONE singing that particular song. And when I'm singing, that's just not a good thing.

Jimmy Buffett! Jimmy Buffett! In my little ol' opinion, Florida's State Song should be "Margaritaville," after all, the Key Lime Pie is now our official State Pie.

Kind of ironic Floridians are being asked to vote, at least it's all electronic so we won't have to worry about hanging chads.

Oh, the Places I've Been and Will Go in Tallahassee

I feel I've been neglecting this blog. My excuses are:

Well, I'm back, at least for a little while. Last weekend I tried to re-enter civilization by heading out to Tallahassee Museum's Market Days at the Fairgrounds. Like last year, the event was busy and packed. I only had two hours to get my shopping done and picked up a few nice things, including a pair of classy earrings by my favorite Tallahassee jeweler, Page Rozelle (I'm wearing them in this photo). She just doesn't craft jewelry, she creates art and I love her work. I really hope she'll be at the Tallahassee Downtown Art Festival Dec. 8.

Saturday is a busy day in the Tallahassee area, in addition to the 10th Annual 'Just One More' Invitational Arts Festival, these are other events on my radar:

The Havana Holiday Parade & Lawnmower Contest at 10 a.m.

Over at Word Traffic Books, Perry, Fla. native Pat Cook will be reading from her book Faux Elvis at 11 a.m. (I looked up the book and it definitely looks like a fun read, especially to those who believe Elvis didn't die on Aug. 16, 1977.)

Be sure to check out the Tallahassee CVB Web site for a list of other great Tallahassee area events happening this weekend.

The most important date coming up is December 15, Buy Local Day. This is a great time to finish up the holiday shopping and supporting locally-owned Tallahassee businesses. I love shopping at independently owned shops like the ones at Lake Ella or Railroad Square. It's as though the items were either made with our placed on display with care and love. I just get the warm fuzzies when I buy locally, how about you?

Green Guide Class: Bitter Sweet

It's hard to believe this semester's Wakulla Ecotourism Institute is over. It's been a fabulous ride and I'm looking forward to finishing up next semester.

Last weekend was a field trip to explore some of the sink holes in Wakulla State Park and Apalachicola State Park with Cal Jameson. Cal's a self-proclaimed hippie from the 1970s who skinny dipped in many of the sinks he showed.

Oh, the tales he told!

It was a great day hearing a slice of Wakulla history with another resident who lived. He talked of how the hippies camped near these swim holes in the 1970s and how the sheriff would try to bust them up. He talked about the raising of a car found at the bottom of a sink (and explained how sink holes end up being dumping grounds for stolen items, like stolen cars).

Some of the sinks were crystal clear and very tempting to jump into. Some were covered in duck weed and some topped with fallen leaves. He gave us a map and pointed out which ones are still swimming holes and showed us where we can drive, park and ride a bike (or walk) to the cooling off spot.

The next day, the class graduated, all but me. I'm a part-timer, remember? It was bitter sweet. One after one each student gave their presentation. I was so proud of them. I got a little teary-eyed here and there.

A celebration followed at Melody's and Norm's place, bonfire and all. It was a great way to chill, meet some of the family members of students and end the semester.

I'm looking forward to the next set of classes which begin in January. It'll be interesting to see how the next group of future green guides are.

Is it Me or is Crime Up in Tallahassee?

This week, I've heard of three businesses being robbed plus a bank, all fairly close to where I live. Then last week, someone got shot in the parking lot of their apartment complex. Is it me or has Tallahassee always had daily crime? I also found it odd that last month my apartment complex distributed fliers asking residents to keep alert, be cautious when entering our apartments and if we know of a crime, report it. I need to check the police blotter to see if something happened here.

Is the perception of increased crime due to:

• I have a heightened state of awareness and crime isn't up (it's a figment of my imagination).
• It's the holiday time and people are becoming criminals to have a merry Christmas.
• The economy is tanking and people are becoming criminals to make ends meet.

Things that make you go, "hmm."
